Another title from A Book Apart was re-released for free. The latest? Tim Brown’s Flexible sentence. I may not be the biggest expert on typography and its best practices, but I remember reading this book (it’s still on the shelf next to me!) with the thought, “Maybe, just.” PerhapsMaybe I can have a conversation with him about it Robin when I finished it.
I still think I’m in “maybe” territory, but that’s not Tim’s fault – I found the book super helpful and accessible for newbies like me who want to improve. For convenience, I’m leaving out the chapter titles here to give you an idea of what you’re getting.
- What is typesetting?
- Prepare text and code (Planning is definitely part of the typesetting process)
- Select fonts (that helped me a lot!)
- Form text blocks (Modern CSS can help here)
- Making compositions (Ideal if you’re designing long-form content)
- Pressure relief
