Dialogues Blog | CSS-Tricks

“This is not a website. Or even a blog. It’s a conversation.”

That’s the idea! Jay Hoffman and I have been chatting for a long time now, since he started a Series on web history. It’s very relaxing to talk to someone who knows all the interesting nooks and crannies of the Internet.

Anyway, I always look forward to these chats. Sometimes one of us can’t make it for some reason. At the time, we had talked about different approaches to blogging and were particularly interested in the whole “digital garden” Concept. We weren’t planning on planting one or anything, but it inspired us to move our long-standing conversation into a blog – you know, one of the best mediums in the history of the web.

We didn’t want the blog to be linear in the sense that it would be an archive of posts in chronological order. No, instead we wanted it to start as a seed that would grow into a vine that would twist and turn in different places.

This is where the idea of ”dialogues” came in. Basically, it all comes from Jay. He starts by asking me a question, which I answer in a post with a follow-up question, which he answers in a post with a follow-up question, and so on and so forth.

The first question is already up there and is a good little icebreaker: When did something click for you on the Internet? I had to take a moment to process this and think about myself as a web user 30 years ago. What a great little thought exercise and conversation starter!
